Let’s Talk Crystal Sense

Whether you’ve just picked up your first tumbled stone, or you’ve got a growing collection on every windowsill, one thing’s for sure: the world of crystals is magical—and sometimes ... mystifying.

There’s a lot of information out there. Some of it’s helpful. Some of it’s, well ... let’s just say it’s more sparkle than substance. From TikTok trends to that one cousin who insists on burying everything in the dirt under the full moon barefoot (no worries if it works for you, but please remember where you put them), it’s easy to get overwhelmed or confused.

That’s where this little guide comes in.

We’re here to bust the most common myths about crystals—the things people think are true, but might be holding them back from really connecting with their stones. Whether it’s about “doing it wrong,” or thinking you need a certain level of belief or “spiritual rank” to even start—we’re clearing the air.

This isn’t about rules. It’s about clarity, confidence, and getting the most out of your crystal journey—your way.

Ready to separate the sparkle from the static?

Let’s dig in.

1: “Crystals Only Work If You Believe in Them.”

While belief can enhance your experience with crystals, it’s not a requirement for them to work. Crystals have been used for centuries across various cultures, often with deep reverence and respect for their natural properties. Whether or not you fully believe in the metaphysical properties of crystals, they can still affect your mood, environment, and even your mindset simply through their presence and the intention you set for them.

What Really Matters: You don’t have to go “all in” from day one. Just start noticing. For example, we’ve had customers who were skeptical but still reported sleeping better with Amethyst under their pillow, or feeling more focused at work with Fluorite on their desk.

The effectiveness of a crystal doesn’t depend entirely on belief—it’s about your connection to it. Sometimes it’s less about dramatic crystal magic and more about how a stone changes the feel of a space—or even your mindset when you keep reaching for it day after day. You don’t need to have 100% belief for them to impact your life positively.

Some stones grow on you slowly. Others practically move in and make themselves comfortable immediately. Trust that whatever impact they have is valid, whether you see it immediately or not.

Bottom Line: Crystals don’t require blind faith to work. They offer benefits simply by being present, and your connection to them will evolve naturally. Let them exist with you. Curiosity is more than enough to begin.

2: “All Crystals of the Same Type Are the Same.”

No two crystals, even if they’re the same type, are identical. This is because each stone forms under unique conditions, influenced by factors such as its geological environment, the minerals surrounding it, and the temperature and pressure at the time of formation. Just like the same type of tree can produce different-looking fruits depending on where it’s grown, crystals can vary dramatically even when they share the same name.

What Really Matters: Let’s take Clear Quartz, for example. The Clear Quartz you find in Brazil may be large, pristine, and shiny, often with fewer inclusions. But Clear Quartz from Arkansas might have more natural flaws and cloudy inclusions because it formed in that specific location. The energy of these pieces can also feel different. Some collectors feel that Brazilian Clear Quartz tends to have a lighter, more uplifting vibe, while the Arkansas Clear Quartz might feel more grounding and deep.

Or consider Amethyst. While the color is usually purple, Amethyst from Brazil often has lighter, more translucent shades, while Amethyst from Uruguay can have a much darker, richer violet hue, "grape jelly," that many feel has deeper energetic properties that bring a stronger sense of protection or transformation. The differences in their mineral content and the environmental conditions where they grew influence how these stones feel and behave energetically.

Even stones from the same mine can vary depending on the depth at which they were found, the mineral mix in the area, and how long they took to form. Crystals from hotter, high-pressure environments may feel more intense and energetic, while those from cooler, lower-pressure conditions may be more calming and soothing.

Bottom Line: Not all crystals of the same type are the same. Location, geological conditions, and even the stone’s specific growth process make each one unique. The more you learn about a crystal’s origin, the more you can appreciate its specific properties and how it connects with you.

Read our blog: "Congo and Brazilian Citrine—besides their location, what is the difference?" for another example of "same but different."

3: “You Have to Cleanse Your Crystals Regularly.”

Cleansing is often recommended, but it’s not always necessary, or something to do constantly. Crystals don’t get “dirty” in the traditional sense. The idea behind cleansing is that crystals can absorb unwanted or negative energy, but this isn’t always true. Not every crystal needs to be cleansed after each use or have a complicated cleansing ritual.

What Really Matters: Instead of stressing over cleansing, focus on how the crystal feels. If it feels off, you might choose to cleanse it—but it’s not something that needs to happen on a regular schedule.

Methods like smudging with sage or palo santo, using sound, or even simply setting an intention to clear the crystal can all be effective when you feel it’s needed.

Other ways include burying in dirt, sitting in moonlight or sunlight, or rinsing in water (make sure the crystal is safe with these methods).

The key is trusting your intuition. If you feel a need to cleanse, then do it. Otherwise, there’s no reason to follow a strict routine.

Bottom Line: You don’t need to cleanse your crystals on a rigid schedule. It’s about staying connected to your stones and cleansing them when it feels right for you.

4: “If a Crystal Breaks, It’s no Good.”

A crystal breaking doesn’t mean it’s lost its power or usefulness. Crystals can break for a variety of reasons, from being dropped or chipped to simply undergoing natural wear and tear. In fact, many people believe that when a crystal breaks, it can actually signify that its job has been completed (or it took a “hit” for you) or that its energy has shifted. However, it’s not the end of its journey.

What Really Matters: If a crystal breaks, don’t see it as a bad sign or something to discard. In fact, broken crystals can still hold value in other ways. Some people keep broken pieces as part of their collection or even use them for other purposes, such as crystal grids, craftwork, or creating jewelry.

Others choose to bury the broken crystal, symbolizing a return to the earth. While this isn’t necessary, it can be a meaningful ritual if it resonates with you.

A broken crystal can still be a symbol of transformation, reminding you of the lessons it helped you learn. It can signify the end of one phase and the beginning of another. Crystals are here to assist you, not to be perfect. Their usefulness isn’t bound by their condition, so don’t be quick to dismiss them if they break.

Bottom Line: A broken crystal is not useless. It still holds meaning and potential, and you can decide what it will bring into your life next, whether that’s keeping it, repurposing it, giving it away, or even returning it to the earth for transformation.

5: “You Have to Be Into Spirituality to Use Crystals.”

Crystals are for everyone, no matter where you are on your spiritual journey—or if you're even on one. There’s no required way to work with crystals. In fact, crystals can be a fun and grounding way to add intention and energy to your everyday life, whether you’re deeply involved in spiritual practices or simply curious about their effects.

What Really Matters: The beauty of crystals is that they don’t require a specific belief system to benefit from them. You can use crystals to help focus your energy, improve your mood, or add a touch of nature to your space. If you’re drawn to a crystal, that’s enough of a reason to work with it.

Crystals don’t discriminate based on your level of spiritual involvement; they’re just tools to help you navigate your environment and energy, however you choose to engage with them.

Bottom Line: You don’t need to be “spiritual” to use crystals. They’re accessible and beneficial to anyone who is curious or open to their unique qualities.

6: “The Bigger the Crystal, the More Powerful.”

While it’s true that larger crystals often have a more noticeable visual impact, especially for decor, size doesn’t necessarily equate to strength. A small, carefully chosen crystal can be just as powerful as a massive cluster if it aligns with your intentions and needs. Crystals are not about their size, but about the energy and connection you have with them.

What Really Matters: The effectiveness of a crystal isn’t determined by its size; it’s about the energy you bring to the relationship. Sometimes, smaller crystals are even more powerful because they’re easier to handle, place in your space, or carry with you throughout the day.

Whether it’s a tiny tumbled stone or a large raw specimen, the right crystal for you is one that resonates with you personally.

Bottom Line: Bigger is not always better, but each size has its pluses. We’ve seen tiny pocket stones become daily companions, while larger statement pieces completely change the feel of a room.

7: “If You Don’t Feel Energy Right Away, It’s Not Working.”

Crystals don’t always provide an immediate, tangible sensation. Some people may feel a burst of energy or a shift right away, but for many others, the effects are subtle and gradual. Crystals can influence your energy, emotions, and environment over time in ways that might not always be immediately apparent.

What Really Matters: It’s important to be patient with your crystals and trust the process. Just like any other tool, crystals can take time to have an impact. They are here to assist you, but their effects may unfold in small, gentle ways, often when you least expect them. The key is consistency and openness to the experience, without rushing or forcing an outcome.

Bottom Line: Not feeling immediate energy doesn’t mean it’s not working. Crystals are often most effective when we let them be, allowing their energy to flow naturally over time.

8: “Only Rare or Expensive Crystals Are Worth Collecting.”

While rare crystals certainly have unique qualities and appeal, especially to serious collectors, they’re not the only ones worth having. There’s a vast world of crystals out there, and many common stones are just as powerful, beautiful, and capable of providing the support or energy you need. The idea that rare crystals are the only ones that matter can limit your options and lead you to overlook wonderful, easily accessible, and affordable stones.

What Really Matters: Crystals aren’t about their rarity or price tag; they’re about how they resonate with you. Stones that are more readily available can still have amazing qualities and serve as valuable tools in your collection. Many “everyday” crystals can be just as stunning as their rarer counterparts and offer their own unique beauty. Whether a crystal is rare or common, its worth is determined by how it works for you and your specific intentions.

Don’t overlook the “ordinary” stones. A humble piece of Clear Quartz, for example, may have the same energy you need in comparison to its exquisitely flawless Himalayan cousin.

It’s more important to choose crystals that speak to you, not just because they are rare or expensive.

Bottom Line: You don’t have to chase rare crystals to build a meaningful collection. Focus on the stones that resonate with you and serve your unique needs, because everyday crystals can be just as captivating and effective as the high-priced ones.

9: “You Need a Certain Crystal for …”

A lot of people get stuck trying to find the “right” crystal—as if there’s one exact stone they’re supposed to choose for love, anxiety, protection, focus, sleep, confidence, or whatever they’re working on. In reality, crystals aren’t that rigid.

Many stones overlap energetically, and your connection to a piece often matters more than finding the “official” crystal for a specific purpose.

What Really Matters: Sometimes the crystal you’re most drawn to ends up being the one you work with the most, even if it wasn’t the one a chart or social media post told you to choose.

We’ve seen people connect deeply with stones they originally bought because they liked the color, while others bought highly recommended crystals and barely interacted with them.

Bottom Line: You don’t need to worry about finding the perfect crystal for what you need. Curiosity, connection, and personal preference matter far more than following a checklist.
