Bloodstone, also known as heliotrope, is a striking variety of chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of quartz. Its rich dark green to bluish-green body is flecked with red or brown spots caused by inclusions of iron oxide or hematite—patterns that have long been said to resemble drops of blood.
