Larimar, a variety of pectolite, was first discovered in 1916 by Miguel Domingo Fuertes Loren, a miner from the Dominican Republic. However, its significance was not fully recognized at that time, and it remained relatively obscure for decades. In the 1970s, the stone was rediscovered by a Dominican priest named Miguel Méndez. Méndez, captivated by the stone’s beauty and rarity, named it “Larimar” in honor of his daughter, Larissa, blending her name with the Spanish word mar, which means “sea,” reflecting the stone’s beautiful blue hues that resemble the ocean. The rediscovery and subsequent naming of Larimar helped bring global attention to this exceptional gemstone.

The rarity of Larimar is primarily due to its unique location. All known deposits of the stone are found in the mountainous region of the Dominican Republic, specifically in the areas surrounding the town of Bahoruco. The mine where Larimar is extracted is small and isolated, with the gemstone only found in certain pockets deep within the earth.  

Mining in this region is particularly challenging due to environmental factors such as landslides and flooding, as well as the remote nature of the site.

Over the years, the Dominican government has implemented strict regulations to protect both miners and the surrounding environment. As of 2024, the primary Larimar mines in the Dominican Republic are temporarily closed due to safety concerns and challenging working conditions. While the government has been working on improving mining practices, it doesn't change the fact that these mines are not fully operational at the moment. As a result, Larimar is even scarcer, and the stockpiled supply is being sold, but once those reserves run out, access to fresh Larimar will be even more limited. These factors, along with the stone's scarcity, have solidified Larimar as one of the most sought-after gemstones in the world.
