Larimar, often called the “Stone of Atlantis” or “Dolphin Stone,” is a very rare and stunning gemstone that captivates with its tranquil shades of blue. Found exclusively in the Dominican Republic, Larimar is one of the rarest gemstones on Earth!
Larimar, a variety of pectolite, was first discovered in 1916 by Miguel Domingo Fuertes Loren, a miner from the Dominican Republic. However, its significance was not fully recognized at that time, and it remained relatively obscure for decades. In the 1970s, the stone was rediscovered by a Dominican priest named Miguel Méndez. Méndez, captivated by the stone’s beauty and rarity, named it “Larimar” in honor of his daughter, Larissa, blending her name with the Spanish word mar, which means “sea,” reflecting the stone’s beautiful blue hues that resemble the ocean. The rediscovery and subsequent naming of Larimar helped bring global attention to this exceptional gemstone.
The rarity of Larimar is primarily due to its unique location. All known deposits of the stone are found in the mountainous region of the Dominican Republic, specifically in the areas surrounding the town of Bahoruco. The mine where Larimar is extracted is small and isolated, with the gemstone only found in certain pockets deep within the earth.
Mining in this region is particularly challenging due to environmental factors such as landslides and flooding, as well as the remote nature of the site.
Over the years, the Dominican government has implemented strict regulations to protect both miners and the surrounding environment. As of 2024, the primary Larimar mines in the Dominican Republic are temporarily closed due to safety concerns and challenging working conditions. While the government has been working on improving mining practices, it doesn't change the fact that these mines are not fully operational at the moment. As a result, Larimar is even scarcer, and the stockpiled supply is being sold, but once those reserves run out, access to fresh Larimar will be even more limited. These factors, along with the stone's scarcity, have solidified Larimar as one of the most sought-after gemstones in the world.
Metaphysically, Larimar is considered a powerful stone of transformation, deeply connected to the energies of water, air, and the divine feminine. It brings tranquility, peace, and clarity, making it an excellent stone for meditation. Larimar’s soothing energy assists in releasing emotional blockages and promoting healing from past trauma, especially emotional or relational wounds. Its calming properties can help balance the heart and throat chakras, enhancing communication and self-expression while fostering compassionate understanding.
In esoteric traditions, Larimar is deeply tied to the ancient and mystical civilization of Atlantis. The stone is believed to hold the energetic imprint of the Atlanteans' profound spiritual wisdom and knowledge. Many who resonate with the idea of Atlantis believe that Larimar helps to connect them with the lost civilization’s deep understanding of harmony, healing, and the universal flow of energy. Its ocean-like blues are thought to serve as a bridge to higher realms, facilitating past life healing and the unlocking of ancient wisdom from forgotten times.
Also known as the “Dolphin Stone,” Larimar is associated with the dolphins' joyful and free-spirited nature. The stone is believed to enhance intuition, creativity, and emotional flow, allowing the user to tap into their inner playfulness and carefreeness. This connection with dolphins encourages a more profound sense of happiness, communication, and alignment with the natural rhythms of life.
